What Victoria Beckham and Cindy Crawford wear on a midlife girls night out

- Advertisment -

This is surely the most glamorous girls’ night out of all time: Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen, and ably holding her own among the supers, Victoria Beckham.

How are they friends? Who even cares? Oh to be a fly on that wall. Who was the most fashionably late? Who had one too many martinis? Did they get fries for the table?

While we may never know the gossip that transpired, it’s clear that all of the women in attendance brought their fashion A-game. We have Beckham, in a purple satin dress of her own design, and toeless boots. There’s Crawford in a very ‘90s lace corset and silk slip skirt. Christensen wears a minimalist black maxi dress with v-front boots, and Turlington does a sheer monochrome printed look with tights. Each is offering us some strong inspiration for festive attire, but specifically outfits that come into their own for a girls’ night out.

Across the UK this month, countless women will be embarking on their own girls’ nights out; a chance to celebrate the season with our dearest friends, without the distractions of partners and children. There’s something unique about dressing for this kind of occasion; we have enthusiastic support for our boldest, most theatrical style choices.

Girls’ nights are great fodder for social media too, so you need to dress for the camera as well as your friends. These moments must be documented with a group photo – otherwise, did it even happen? Even celebrities appreciate that – these are the photos which will make it onto everyone from the group’s Instagram grids.

Of course, the activity is an important consideration when outfit planning. If you’re going for dinner, wear something bolder on your top half: a statement collar, chandelier earrings, an embellished neckline. Equally, if it’s drinks and dancing, you’ll need to consider how the outfit will look from top-to-toe. Tights and boots, lace tops and leather jackets – certain combinations are fail-safes for this dress code.

Still stuck for ideas? Here are five outfit formulas to inspire your girls’ night out look…

The classic-with-a-twist midi dress

You can’t beat Rixo for a good party dress, and this has just the right degree of pattern and tiers, which will look fabulous when you do a twirl for the girls. Add knee-high boots a la Cindy in winter. It’ll also look great for spring and autumn weddings with sandals.

Ruched sparkle dress, £120,Boden; Remy knee boot £478,Reformation; Sorbie clutch bag, £135,Whistles

The statement skirt

The hero skirt has come of age this winter – there are some truly beautiful options on the high street, from fuchsia sateen at Boden, to slinky colour-block satin at Essentiel Antwerp, to gold leather at Cefinn. Keep your look simple with a long-sleeved black top or a mannish white shirt, and complete the look with the highest heels in your closet.

Long-sleeve top, £35,Cos; Draped midi skirt, £140,Essentiel Antwerp; Recycled brass neck cuff, £57,Arket

The party suit

There’s something so delightful about wearing a suit for a night out. It looks pulled-together, gives the body a little structure, and there are no goose-pimpled limbs on show. Pick a fabric that keeps it firmly in the realm of partywear; anything black, grey or navy belongs in the office.

Green velvet jacket, £100 and trousers, £75, bothWhite Stuff; Margot red bow mule, £304,Loeffler Randall

The not-so-skimpy minidress

If you like your legs this is a good way to bare them without putting everything else on display. The loose fit will hide a multitude of sins, as will the over-the-knee boots. Add sheer tights to complete the look.

Velvet sequinned Halet dress, £220,Sezane

Hush Mischa sequin mini dress, £60,Hush; Demi over-the-knee boots,Air & Grace; Gold-tone and faux-pearl earrings, £17.99,Mango

The jeans and a nice top

If you feel like your most comfortable and flattering trousers are your go-to jeans, then this is for you. Ideally, they’ll be black or charcoal, rather than blue, which looks a bit smarter. Coated or leather jeans are also eveningwear-friendly. Go to town with the top; fringing, ruffles, corsages, you name it. This formula is perfect for sit-down dinner dressing.

Silver beaded tassel jacket, £209,Mint Velvet

Delmont velvet jeans, £110,Jigsaw; Metallic pussybow blouse, £185,Me+Em; Valerie sandals, £165,Esska
