Mr Jones and Mr Tate, who is facing charges of rape and human trafficking in Romania, heaped praise on Mr Musk’s changes at Twitter during a live-streamed conversation on the platform on Sunday night.
Mr Musk said Twitter planned to “hew as closely to the law as possible” on freedom of expression and “do our best not to go beyond the law”.
He said: “If somebody says something that is unlawful then we will take action, if somebody says something that is not unlawful then we would aspire to not take action.”
Mr Musk admitted bringing back Mr Jones would be “bad for X financially”. The social network also brought back Infowars, Mr Jones’ website.
Mr Jones apologised when asked by Mr Musk about his Sandy Hook comments. Mr Musk said: “Obviously, if somebody is denying murders of children, that is not cool at all.”
Mr Jones said: “I apologize on every show. And I’ll say it again, I apologize that I just gave my commentary because I’m really just a guy”. He claimed he played “devil’s advocate”.
For several years, Mr Jones repeated claims that the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax and accused victims of “method acting” and called it the “fakest thing since the three-dollar bill”.
In 2021, he was found liable for defaming the parents of children killed in the mass shooting and in 2022, admitted the shooting was “100pc real”.
The conspiracy theorist and online broadcaster has been ordered to pay $1.5bn to the families of the victims of the mass shooting over his false claims. He later declared bankruptcy.
Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy joined the Twitter event with the Infowars founder, Mr Musk and Mr Tate. Mr Ramaswamy said he believed there would be more “truth than not” from Mr Jones.
Mr Tate has denied any wrongdoing.
