Pope 'preparing his tomb' and simplifying his funeral plans

It is one of four major papal basilicas located in Rome and although on Italian soil, it is owned by the Holy See. Pope Francis will become one of the first pontiffs in more than a century to be buried outside the Vatican.

He said he had met Vatican officials to simplify his funeral ceremony.

“When old age arrives and you reach limits, you need to prepare yourself,” he said. “I will launch a new funeral ritual [for popes],” he joked.

While he is not thinking of resigning, he praised the “courage” of Pope Benedict to step down when he felt he could no longer carry on in the role as spiritual leader of the world’s Roman Catholics.

“He was a great and humble man who when he realised his limits had the courage to say ‘enough’,” Francis told the Mexican broadcaster N+.

He confirmed that he had an invitation to return to his homeland from the newly elected president of Argentina, Javier Milei.

Mr Milei has in the past been highly critical of Pope Francis, his fellow Argentine, calling him a “filthy Leftist” and “the imbecile that’s in Rome.”
